Mayova, Haitope, Karupu, Nghipandulwa shine in Oshakati

Namibia's big names got the local athletics season underway with decent performances during the Bank Windhoek Grand Prix held at the Oshakati Independence Stadium on Saturday. As reported in the  Namibian : Globine Mayova, Lavinia Haitope, Basilius Karupu and Daniel Nghipandulwa were the stars of the competition after winning double in their respective events. Mayova took top honours in the women’s 200m and 400m sprint events, clocking 24,46 and 55,73 seconds respectively. The determination of 400m national champion Basilius Karupu ensured that he retained his title as 400m Grand Prix Champion when he finished with a time of 48,13 seconds. Karupu then upstaged favourite Hitjivirue Kaanjuka in the 200m sprint event, as he narrowly edged his rival with a time of 21,72. Kaanjuka however reigned supreme in the men’s 100m with a time of 10,75. Kenya's Dickson Chumba wins Marathon Eindhoven in course record 2:05:47

Photo credit: Marathon Eindhoven Studio CLICK Kenya's Dickson Chumba set a new course record when he won the 2012 De Lage Landen Marathon Eindhoven in a personal best of 2:05:46 on Sunday. Chumba, 25, took two seconds off the previous course record of 2:05:48 set by Kenya's Jafred Kipchumba in 2011. He moved into the lead at 28km and was never headed, coming home 24 seconds in front of his compatriot Francis Chepkwony, who took more than four minutes off his previous best with 2:06:11. It is Chumba's second victory in his six marathons, also winning last year in Rome. He also has three second-place finishes to his name. "However, I am disappointed I didn't run under 2:05," said Chumba, who was on course to break that barrier until 39km, when he started to tire. Six men finished under two hours nine minutes. ZURICH (SUI): The 800 m world record holder David Rudisha of Kenya is the latest top name confirmed for Weltklasse Zurich on August 30. Already earlier the participation of Usain Bolt was announced.
