PRETORIA (RSA, Feb 25):  The unexpected highlight at the second Yellow Pages Series meeting in Pretorial yesterday was a new South African 400m hurdles record by LJ van Zyl in 47.66.

It was raining heavily before the hurdles (thunderstorm), during race still light rain with wind gusts, wet track and 15 degrees. With the conditions far from ideal, Van Zyl was still able to improve the 47.80 of Llewellyn Herbert from 2000 Olympics in Sydney. In second position was Cornel Fredericks in 49.61.

"I didn't want to lose in front of my people and expected to run a good 48 second race," said the new record holder who´s previous best was 47.94 from 2009.

Last year only two athletes ran faster in the event as Van Zyl on Friday.

World champion Caster Semenya was fourth in the 1500 m in 4:24.68. She was beaten by Lebogang Phalula 4:19.08, Lebo Phalula 4:21.09 and Christine Kalmer 4:24.57.

World junior long jump champion Luvo Manyonga won his event with 8.05m. Janice Josephs was the best woman with 6.34m in her first competition of the year.
