Athletics Briefs: Gebreselassie promises a strong Ethiopian team for African Championships..and more
ADDIS ABABA (ETH): Ethiopia will enter a strong team in the 17th African Athletics Championships in Nairobi. Haile Gebrselassie, the Ethiopian legend said: „I expect to see a strong Ethiopian team in Nairobi and I expect to see Meseret Defar, Tirunesh Dibaba and Kenenisa Bekele. „ said for nation.co.ke. The 17th African Athletics Championships in Nairobi will also be used to select Africa‘s team to the IAAF Continental Cup (formerly World Cup) to be held in Split, Croatia early September.
RABAT (MAR, Apr 25): About 22,0000 women took part to the 3rd „Course de la Victoire“ organised by former 400H world champion Nezha Bidouane. Malika Assasah won the 8km race in 27:17 ahead of Zhor El Kamch, who is back to racing after a materniy live (27:20). Bouchra Salhi and Malika Belfakir finished 3rd and 4th in 27:25 and 27:42. Gebreselassie holds the world record with his 2:03.59 performance in the marathon of Berlin two years ago and was quoted „There are good athletes, but I think I am the ideal candidate to break it again.
A time of 2:02 is very possible.“ He also said he is not surprised by the performance of compatriot Tsegaye Kebede in the London marathon. Gebreselassie‘s next race will be a 10km in Manchester on May 17th, after that he will decide whether to take part in the Berlin or Chicago marathon in the fall. Long term goal is marathon at 2012 London Games.
